How the Nether Portal Ratio Works

In Minecraft, 1 block in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld along the X and Z axes. The Y (height) coordinate is not scaled. So to find where an Overworld portal will connect:

This 8:1 ratio is exactly why players build Nether highways: walking 100 blocks in the Nether moves you 800 blocks across the Overworld.

Building Perfectly Linked Portals

Minecraft doesn’t always link portals the way you expect. When you step through a portal, the game looks for an existing portal near the scaled coordinate; if it finds one within range it links to it, otherwise it generates a brand-new portal. To get a reliable 1:1 link:

Avoiding Portal Cross-Linking

Because of the 8:1 ratio, portals that are close together in the Nether can steal each other’s links. Keep separate portal pairs at least 128 blocks apart in the Nether — that’s 1024 blocks apart in the Overworld — so each Overworld portal connects to its own Nether portal.
