What Are Slime Chunks?

In Minecraft, slime chunks are special 16×16 block areas where slimes can spawn naturally below Y level 40, regardless of the light level. About 1 in 10 chunks in any world is a slime chunk. The pattern is determined by your world seed and never changes.

How Slime Chunk Spawning Works

• Y Level: Slimes spawn in slime chunks at Y level 0 to 40 (in the Overworld)
• Light Level: Slimes can spawn at any light level in slime chunks
• Space Required: Slimes need a 3-block tall space to spawn (size dependent)
• Swamp Biome: Slimes also spawn in swamp biomes at night between Y=51-69

How to Find Your World Seed

• Java Edition: Type /seed in the chat (requires cheats enabled)

• Dig out a large area below Y=40 in the slime chunk
• Create spawning platforms with 3-block gaps
• Light up the surrounding caves to maximize spawn rates
• Add a collection system with water streams or iron golems

Tips for Maximum Efficiency

• Build your farm in an area where multiple slime chunks are adjacent — look for clusters on the map above
• The AFK spot should be 24-128 blocks from the spawning platforms
• Light up all caves within 128 blocks to prevent hostile mobs from filling the mob cap
• Use the "Nearest Slime Chunks" table to find the closest slime chunk to your base
