Strongholds are underground fortresses that contain the End portal — the only way to reach the End dimension and fight the Ender Dragon. Finding a stronghold is a critical milestone in every Minecraft playthrough. This guide covers every method to locate one.

Strongholds are distributed across 8 concentric rings centered on the world origin (0,0). Ring 1 is closest and easiest to find with Eyes of Ender — the first stronghold you encounter is almost always in Ring 1 (within ~3,000 blocks of spawn).

What is a Stronghold?

A stronghold is a large underground structure made of stone bricks, mossy stone bricks, and cracked stone bricks. It contains corridors, stairways, libraries, fountains, and most importantly — the End portal room.

📊 Stronghold Facts:
  • 128 strongholds per world (Java Edition)
  • 3 strongholds per world (Bedrock Edition — closest ring only)
  • The nearest stronghold is 1,408–2,688 blocks from spawn (Java)
  • Found between Y: -20 and Y: 40 typically
  • Each End portal frame has a 10% chance of already containing an Eye of Ender

Method 1: Eyes of Ender (In-Game)

The traditional way to find a stronghold in survival mode.

What You Need

  • Ender Pearls — Obtained by killing Endermen or bartering with Piglins
  • Blaze Powder — Crafted from Blaze Rods (obtained from Blazes in Nether Fortresses)
  • Combine them to craft Eyes of Ender (you'll need up to 12)

Step-by-Step

  1. Throw an Eye of Ender — Right-click (or tap) to throw it into the air. It will float toward the nearest stronghold.
  2. Follow the direction — Walk in the direction the Eye traveled. Throw another Eye after walking 200-300 blocks to confirm direction.
  3. Watch for the Eye to go downward — When the Eye floats downward instead of forward, you're standing directly above the stronghold.
  4. Dig down — Mine straight down (carefully!) to find the stronghold. It's typically between Y: 0 and Y: 40.
  5. Find the portal room — Explore the stronghold corridors to locate the End portal room. Place Eyes of Ender in any empty portal frames.
💡 Pro Tip: Eyes of Ender have a 20% chance of breaking when thrown. Bring at least 15 to be safe — you need 12 for the portal and a few extras for navigation.

Method 2: Triangulation (Advanced)

Speedrunners use this technique to find strongholds faster with just 2 Eyes of Ender:

  1. Throw an Eye at your starting position and note the direction (press F3 to see your facing angle)
  2. Walk perpendicular to the Eye's direction for about 200 blocks
  3. Throw a second Eye and note its direction
  4. The stronghold is where the two lines intersect — calculate the intersection point

Method 3: Using MC Seed View (Fastest)

The fastest way to find every stronghold on your seed — no Eyes of Ender needed.

  1. Find your seed — In Minecraft, type /seed to see your world seed.
  2. Open MC Seed View — Go to mcseedview.com and enter your seed.
  3. Enable Stronghold — In the Features panel, toggle on "Stronghold".
  4. Find all 128 — Zoom out to see every stronghold's exact location. Click any icon for coordinates.
  5. Copy /tp command — Click the 📋 button to copy the teleport command directly.

Java vs. Bedrock: Stronghold Differences

Stronghold generation differs significantly between editions:

  • Java Edition — 128 strongholds in 8 concentric rings. The first ring (3 strongholds) is 1,408–2,688 blocks from origin.
  • Bedrock Edition — Unlimited strongholds, but they don't follow a fixed ring pattern. They can generate at any distance.
  • Portal frames — Both editions have 12 frames. Each has a 10% chance of being pre-filled with an Eye.

Stronghold Tips & Tricks

  • Bring building blocks — You may need to bridge across ravines or lava that cut through the stronghold.
  • Watch for Silverfish — The stone bricks in strongholds can be infested. Mine carefully.
  • Mark your path — Place torches on one side of corridors to avoid getting lost.
  • Libraries have loot — Stronghold libraries contain enchanted books and other valuables.
  • Not all strongholds have portals — In rare cases, world generation can override the portal room. Use MC Seed View to verify before spending hours searching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find a stronghold without Eyes of Ender?

In survival mode, Eyes of Ender are the intended method. However, you can use MC Seed View to find the exact coordinates if you know your seed — no crafting required.

How deep are strongholds?

Most strongholds generate between Y: -20 and Y: 40 in Java Edition. In Bedrock Edition, they can be at various depths. The End portal room is usually between Y: 20 and Y: 30.

Why can't I find the portal room?

Strongholds can be cut off by caves, ravines, or other generated structures. If you can't find the portal room after extensive searching, try mining through walls — the room might be behind a generated dead end. Use MC Seed View to confirm the stronghold actually has a portal room.
