Ancient Cities are massive underground structures hidden in the terrifying Deep Dark biome at Y=-51. They contain the game's most exclusive loot — Swift Sneak III, Echo Shards, Disc Fragment 5, and unique armor trims — but are guarded by the Warden, Minecraft's most dangerous mob with 500 HP and the ability to kill full netherite players in two hits.

What Are Ancient Cities?
Ancient Cities are the largest underground structure in Minecraft — sprawling ruins made of deepslate bricks and sculk blocks that stretch hundreds of blocks in each direction. Key facts:
- Generation level: Always at Y=-51 (deep underground)
- Biome requirement: Only in Deep Dark biomes
- Deep Dark location: Forms under mountains and high-altitude terrain (surface Y 200+)
- Size: Can span 200+ blocks in each direction — among the largest structures in the game
- Lighting: Very dark. Soul lanterns and candles provide minimal light
- Hostile mobs: No regular hostile mobs spawn — only the Warden can be summoned by sculk shriekers
How to Find Ancient Cities
Method 1: MC Seed View (Recommended)
Use our Ancient City Finder to see every Ancient City location on your seed with exact coordinates.
Method 2: /locate Command
/locate structure minecraft:ancient_city
Returns coordinates instantly. Requires cheats enabled.
Method 3: Mine to Y=-51 Under Mountains
- Find a mountain biome on the surface (stony peaks, frozen peaks, or tall mountains)
- Mine straight down (carefully!) to Y=-51
- At that level, look for sculk blocks — dark blue/green blocks that spread organically
- Follow sculk patches — they get denser as you approach an Ancient City
- Listen for the distinctive sculk clicking sounds that indicate proximity
Sculk Detection System — Complete Mechanics
Ancient Cities are protected by a network of Sculk Sensors and Sculk Shriekers that detect player movement and can summon the Warden.
Sculk Sensors
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Detection range | 8 blocks radius |
| What they detect | Footsteps, block placement/breaking, eating, projectiles, item drops |
| What they DON'T detect | Sneaking, wool placement, items on wool, throwing wool |
| Activation | Sends a redstone signal AND alerts nearby Sculk Shriekers |
| Cooldown | 2 seconds between activations |
Sculk Shriekers
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Activation | Receives signal from Sculk Sensors or direct player vibration |
| Warning system | Gives Darkness effect and emits particles |
| Warden summon | 4th activation within 10 minutes summons the Warden |
| Warning counter | Per player, resets after 10 minutes of no activations |
| Natural vs. placed | Only naturally generated shriekers summon the Warden |
What Wool Can Do
- Walking on wool produces NO vibrations — Sculk Sensors ignore it completely
- Placing wool is silent — sensors don't detect wool block placement
- Breaking wool is silent — no vibrations produced
- Strategy: Create wool pathways through the city by placing wool blocks as you go. Walk on them freely.
The Warden — How to Survive
Warden Stats
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 500 HP (250 hearts) — more than the Ender Dragon |
| Melee damage | 30 damage (Normal), 45 (Hard) — can two-hit full netherite |
| Sonic boom damage | 10 damage — ignores armor, enchantments, shields |
| Sonic boom range | 15 blocks |
| Detection | Blind — relies on vibrations and smell |
| Speed | Faster than player walking speed when angry |
| Despawn | After 60 seconds with no vibrations detected |
Survival Strategy if the Warden Spawns
- Immediately crouch/sneak — stop all movement and vibration
- Do NOT run — running makes noise and the Warden is faster than you
- Throw a projectile away from you — snowballs or eggs distract the Warden. Throw them 20+ blocks away
- Slowly sneak away while the Warden investigates the distraction
- Wait 60 seconds — if it detects no vibrations for 60 seconds, it despawns by digging into the ground
- If cornered, use a swift tower — pillar up 20+ blocks. The sonic boom can still hit you but it does less damage than melee
Recommended Gear for Ancient City Raids
| Item | Quantity | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Full Diamond/Netherite Armor | 1 set | Protection against Warden if detected |
| Wool (any color) | 3-5 stacks | Create silent pathways, block sculk sensors |
| Snowballs or Eggs | 2-3 stacks | Distract the Warden by throwing away from you |
| Shears | 1 | Efficiently harvesting wool from sheep before the trip |
| Silk Touch Pickaxe | 1 | Collect sculk blocks (decorative), avoid triggering sensors |
| Night Vision Potions | 3-5 | Ancient Cities are extremely dark — essential for visibility |
| Swift Sneak Leggings | 1 (if obtained) | Move faster while sneaking — found inside the city itself |
| Golden Apples | 3-5 | Emergency healing if Warden hits you |
| Ender Pearls | 5-10 | Emergency escape if cornered by Warden |
| Torches | 2 stacks | Light up areas to see and prevent other mob spawns |
Step-by-Step Stealth Looting Guide
- Prepare wool pathways: Before entering the main city area, crouch and place wool blocks as a walkway
- Identify Sculk Shriekers: They're the tall, dark blue blocks with tendrils on top. Stay 8+ blocks from shriekers whenever possible
- Destroy Sculk Shriekers first: Mine them (while sneaking!) to remove the Warden summoning threat. A pickaxe breaks them without Silk Touch — they just won't drop themselves
- Clear a safe zone: Remove all shriekers in an area before looting chests nearby
- Loot chests while sneaking: Opening chests creates NO vibration — it's safe. But DON'T eat while near sensors
- Take 10-minute breaks: Your warning counter resets after 10 minutes. Between looting sprints, wait to reset
- Work outward from center: The most valuable loot is in the city center area
Exclusive Ancient City Loot

| Enchanted Golden Apple | ~8% | Powerful healing/buff item (also found elsewhere, rarely) |
| Enchanted Diamond Hoe | ~8% | Often has Efficiency IV or V + Mending |
| Enchanted Diamond Leggings | ~8% | High-level protection enchantments |
| Sculk Sensor | Plentiful | Wireless redstone signal transmission |

How to Craft the Recovery Compass
The Recovery Compass always points toward the location where you last died — invaluable for retrieving lost items in dangerous areas.
Recipe
- 8 Echo Shards (from Ancient City chests) arranged around a regular Compass in a crafting table
- The compass only works when held by the player who died
- Spins randomly if you haven't died or are in a different dimension from your death point
The City Center — Redstone Secret
Every Ancient City has a central structure resembling a portal frame with a reinforced deepslate block at its core. This is a lore-heavy structure that hints at an unreleased feature:
- The frame is made of reinforced deepslate — the hardest block in the game (cannot be moved by pistons, has extremely high blast resistance)
- Below the frame is a hidden redstone circuit — involves skulk sensors connected to redstone components
- The circuit appears to be designed to "open" something, but no functionality is currently implemented
- Community speculation suggests this will become a portal in a future update
- Reinforced deepslate cannot be obtained in survival — it doesn't drop when mined
