Desert Temples (also called Desert Pyramids) are one of the easiest structures to raid in Minecraft — and one of the most rewarding for early game. Each temple contains 4 loot chests with potential diamonds, emeralds, enchanted books, and golden apples. But there's a catch: a hidden TNT trap waits at the bottom of the loot chamber, and stepping on the wrong block sends everything (including you) up in an explosive chain reaction.

📐 See our Methodology page for the complete verification process, editorial standards, and update cadence.

This guide covers finding desert temples, safely navigating the TNT trap, the complete loot table for all 4 chests, how to harvest TNT from the trap, and seeds with temples at spawn.

How to Find Desert Temples

Method 1: MC Seed View

Use our Desert Temple Finder to see every temple on your map.

Method 2: /locate Command

/locate structure minecraft:desert_pyramid

Method 3: Explore Deserts

Desert temples are large and visible from far away. Head to any desert biome and look for their distinctive sandstone shape with orange terracotta decorations on top. They spawn above ground and are nearly impossible to miss.

💡 Visibility: Desert temples are among the easiest structures to spot. The flat desert terrain and the temple's distinctive shape make them visible from 200+ blocks away. Just head to any desert and scan the horizon.

Spawning Mechanics

  • Biome: Desert only
  • Spacing: 32 chunks maximum, 8 chunks minimum between temples
  • Frequency: Very common in large deserts — often 2-3 temples within walking distance
  • Can be buried: Occasionally temples generate partially below sand level. Check for exposed rooftops

Temple Layout — What's Inside

Desert temples are 21×21 block sandstone structures with a central tower. Here's what's inside:

The TNT Trap — How to Survive

🚨 WARNING: Stepping on the stone pressure plate in the hidden chamber detonates 9 TNT blocks beneath you. This destroys all 4 loot chests and their contents, and almost certainly kills you. Always approach the chamber carefully.

Safe Approach — Step by Step

  1. Find the blue terracotta floor — it forms a 2×2 pattern in the center of the main hall floor
  2. Mine straight down through the blue terracotta — dig one of the blue blocks to reveal the hidden chamber below
  3. Look down BEFORE dropping — you should see the stone pressure plate on a sandstone block in the center, with chests in the 4 corners
  4. Water bucket first — place water on the wall of the shaft to ride down safely without fall damage
  5. Destroy the pressure plate — mine it from above before landing. This permanently disarms the trap
  6. Loot all 4 chests — they're safe once the pressure plate is removed
💡 Alternative method: You can also enter from the side by mining through the sandstone walls at ground level and carefully approaching the chamber from the side, avoiding the center pressure plate entirely.

Complete Loot Table (All 4 Chests)

Each temple has 4 chests. Each chest rolls independently from this loot table:

ItemQuantityChance per Chest
Bone1-825%
Rotten Flesh3-725%
Sand1-825%
String1-825%
Gunpowder1-825%
Spider Eye1-325%
Iron Ingot1-518%
Gold Ingot2-718%
Emerald1-318%
Diamond1-36.3%
Iron Horse Armor118%
Golden Horse Armor112.3%
Diamond Horse Armor16.3%
Enchanted Book123.5%
Golden Apple123.5%
Enchanted Golden Apple12.6%
Saddle123.5%
Dune Armor Trim114.3%
💡 Diamond odds: With 4 chests at 6.3% each, there's a ~23% chance of getting at least 1 diamond from a single temple. Raid 3-4 temples and diamonds become very likely. Enchanted books appear in ~23.5% of chests — potentially yielding Mending, Silk Touch, or other valuable enchantments.

How to Harvest the TNT

Each temple contains 9 TNT blocks under the pressure plate. TNT is expensive to craft (5 gunpowder + 4 sand each), so harvesting them is a free bonus:

  1. First, destroy the pressure plate from above (mine it before entering the chamber)
  2. Dig around the TNT carefully — mine the sandstone surrounding the TNT blocks. Don't use fire or lava nearby
  3. Punch the TNT blocks — TNT breaks instantly regardless of tool. No tool needed
  4. Collect all 9 TNT blocks for later use (mining, combat, or pranking)

Dune Armor Trim

The Dune Armor Trim Smithing Template is exclusive to desert temple chests (14.3% chance). It applies a distinctive wave pattern to armor, perfect for desert-themed builds.

  • Apply at a Smithing Table with any armor piece + diamond
  • Duplicate the template: 7 diamonds + 1 Dune Template + 1 Sandstone at a crafting table
  • Works with all material colors (gold, copper, emerald, etc.)

Raiding Multiple Temples Efficiently

For maximum loot, raid multiple temples in one trip:

  1. Use MC Seed View to identify all temple locations in your desert
  2. Plan a route connecting 3-5 nearby temples
  3. Travel by horse — deserts are flat and perfect for horse riding. Saddles drop from temples!
  4. Bring a Silk Touch pickaxe — harvest TNT cleanly and collect terracotta blocks for decoration
  5. Carry an Ender Chest — dump loot into an Ender Chest at each stop so you don't lose everything if you die

Frequently Asked Questions

Can desert temples be buried underground?
Yes. Desert temples can generate partially or fully below the sand surface level. Look for exposed sandstone blocks or terracotta that seem out of place. On rare occasions, only the very top of the tower may be visible above the sand.
Does the TNT trap destroy the loot?
Yes. If the TNT detonates (by stepping on the pressure plate or other means), all 4 chests and their items are destroyed along with the surrounding blocks and the player. Always disarm the pressure plate before entering the chamber.
Can I find enchanted golden apples in desert temples?
Yes! Enchanted Golden Apples (Notch Apples) have a 2.6% chance per chest. With 4 chests per temple, there's about a 10% chance per temple. They're one of the few structures that can contain this rare item.
How many diamonds can I get from one temple?
Each chest has a 6.3% chance to contain 1-3 diamonds. The theoretical maximum is 12 diamonds (3 from each of 4 chests), but averaging 0-3 diamonds per temple is more realistic. Raiding multiple temples is the strategy.
Can I use a desert temple as a base?
Absolutely! Desert temples make excellent bases. They're large, spacious, made of durable sandstone, and the underground chamber is perfect for storage or a hidden room. Just disarm the TNT first, add lighting, and customize to your liking.
Do desert temples spawn in badlands biomes?
No. Despite being in arid terrain, desert temples only generate in the Desert biome specifically. Badlands (Mesa) biomes have their own variant: abandoned Mineshafts near the surface.
