Enchanting is the most important progression system in Minecraft. Properly enchanted gear transforms your gameplay — Protection IV armor cuts incoming damage by 64%, Efficiency V pickaxes mine instantly, and Mending makes your tools last forever. This guide covers everything from building your first enchanting setup to crafting the ultimate enchantment combos for every piece of gear.

Enchanting Table Setup

Crafting Recipe

  • 4 Obsidian (bottom row + center)
  • 2 Diamonds (left and right of center)
  • 1 Book (top center)

Place the enchanting table in an open area with space for bookshelves around it. You need 15 bookshelves arranged correctly to unlock level 30 enchantments (the maximum).

Optimal Bookshelf Layout

Requirements

  • Exactly 15 bookshelves needed for maximum level (30)
  • Bookshelves must be exactly 2 blocks away from the enchanting table (1 block gap)
  • Bookshelves must be at the same level or 1 block above the enchanting table
  • Nothing can be between the bookshelf and the table (the gap must be air)
  • Torches placed on the floor between table and shelves will NOT block the connection

Classic U-Shape Layout

The most popular layout — 15 bookshelves in a U-shape around the table:

B B B B B
B . . . B
B . T . B
B . . . B
B B B B B

(B = Bookshelf, T = Enchanting Table, . = Air)

This uses 15 bookshelves in the bottom layer. You can also stack them two high and use fewer on the ground if you want a different aesthetic.

💡 Bookshelf cost: Each bookshelf requires 3 books + 6 planks. 15 bookshelves = 45 books (135 paper + 45 leather) + 90 planks. Sugar cane is the bottleneck — start a farm early!

How Enchanting Works

  1. Place an item (tool, armor, weapon, or book) in the left slot
  2. Add 1-3 Lapis Lazuli in the right slot
  3. Three enchantment options appear — requiring 1, 2, or 3 levels plus the corresponding lapis
  4. The top option costs 1 level + 1 lapis (weakest), the bottom costs 3 levels + 3 lapis (strongest)
  5. One enchantment name is shown as a hint, but you may receive additional enchantments too
  6. Enchantments are random but seeded — to reset them, enchant a book or cheap item with the level 1 option
💡 Enchantment cycling: If you don't see the enchantment you want, enchant a wooden shovel with the 1-level option. This rerolls all available enchantments for only 1 level + 1 lapis. Repeat until you see what you need.

Anvil Mechanics

The anvil lets you combine enchantments, rename items, and apply enchanted books. Key mechanics:

MechanicDetails
Cost1-39 levels (40+ = "Too Expensive!")
Prior Work PenaltyEach time an item passes through an anvil, its next use costs more
Combining ItemsPlace the target in slot 1, the sacrifice (book/item) in slot 2
Order MattersPut the item with fewer prior uses on the left to minimize cost
Anvil DurabilityAnvils degrade over ~25 uses. Craft replacements (3 iron blocks + 4 iron ingots)
⚠️ "Too Expensive!" trap: If the anvil says "Too Expensive!", the cost exceeds 39 levels. To avoid this, combine books with books first (merging books is cheaper), then apply the final book to the item. Plan your enchantment order carefully.

Optimal Combining Order

To get the most enchantments on one item without hitting "Too Expensive!":

  1. Combine enchantment books in pairs (book + book)
  2. Combine those resulting books (2-enchant book + 2-enchant book)
  3. Apply the final super-book to your item in one operation
  4. This binary-tree approach minimizes the prior work penalty

How to Get Mending

Mending is the most important enchantment — it repairs items using XP, making them last forever. It cannot appear on the enchanting table.

Sources of Mending Books

SourceMethodRenewability
Librarian VillagerTrade emeralds for Mending bookInfinite (best method)
FishingLuck of the Sea III rodInfinite but very slow
Dungeon/Mineshaft ChestsRandom lootLimited, rare
Trial Chamber VaultsVault lootLimited, moderate chance
Raid DropsPillager/Vindicator dropsRenewable but rare
💡 Fastest Mending method: Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager. Check its first trade — if it's not Mending, break and replace the lectern. Repeat until Mending appears. This typically takes 5-20 attempts. See our trading guide for details.

Some enchantments cannot coexist on the same item:

Frequently Asked Questions

How many bookshelves do I need for max enchanting?
15 bookshelves unlocks level 30 enchantments (the maximum). More than 15 has no additional effect. Arrange them in a U-shape or ring, 2 blocks from the table with 1 air block gap.
Can I get Mending from the enchanting table?
No. Mending is a "treasure enchantment" that can only be found in loot chests, fishing, or trading with Librarian villagers. The lectern-cycling method with villagers is the fastest reliable way to get it.
Why does my anvil say "Too Expensive!"?
The cost exceeds 39 levels. This happens when items have been through the anvil too many times (prior work penalty). To solve this: combine books together first (lower penalty), then apply the merged book to the item in one operation. Plan your enchantment order using the binary-tree method.
Should I enchant books or items directly?
Both have uses. Enchant items directly at the table to save on anvil costs and get multi-enchantment results. Enchant books when targeting specific enchantments — books let you stockpile enchantments and apply them strategically via anvil.
What level should I enchant at?
Level 30 (the maximum) gives the best enchantments. Always enchant at level 30 unless you're cycling enchantments with the level 1 option. Lower levels waste lapis and XP on weaker enchantments.
Can I remove enchantments?
Yes. Use a grindstone to remove all enchantments and get some XP back. You cannot selectively remove individual enchantments — it's all or nothing. Curses (Curse of Vanishing, Curse of Binding) cannot be removed by grindstone.
Is Protection IV on all armor pieces worth it?
Absolutely. Protection IV on all 4 armor pieces gives 64% damage reduction against ALL damage types (fire, explosions, melee, projectiles). This stacks with the armor's base defense. It's almost always better than specialized protection enchantments.
