Bastion Remnants are massive Nether structures inhabited by Piglins and Piglin Brutes. They are the primary source of netherite scraps, ancient debris, gilded blackstone, and exclusive loot like the Pigstep music disc and Snout armor trim. Every Minecraft player progressing toward netherite gear should know how to find and raid these structures safely.

Bastions come in 4 distinct types, each with different layouts, mob densities, and loot tables. This guide covers all four types in detail, the safest approach strategies, recommended gear, every notable loot drop, and seeds where bastions generate right next to your Nether portal.

What Are Bastion Remnants?

Bastion Remnants are the largest structures in the Nether — sprawling blackstone fortifications that can span 50-80 blocks in any direction. They were added in Minecraft 1.16 (Nether Update) alongside Piglins, netherite, and the revamped Nether biomes.

Key characteristics:

  • 4 structure variants — Bridge, Hoglin Stable, Housing Units, and Treasure Room. Each generates independently and has unique layouts.
  • Inhabited by Piglins — Regular Piglins can be distracted with gold, but Piglin Brutes attack on sight regardless of gold armor.
  • Blackstone construction — Built from blackstone, gilded blackstone, and basalt. The dark color makes them visible against netherrack.
  • No Wither Skeletons — Unlike Nether Fortresses, bastions contain no Wither Skeletons. They're Piglin-only territory.
  • Biome restriction — Bastions generate in every Nether biome except Basalt Deltas.

How to Find Bastions

Method 1: Use MC Seed View (Fastest)

Switch to the Nether dimension on MC Seed View and enable the Bastion layer. Every bastion is marked with coordinates. You can also use the dedicated Bastion Finder tool.

Method 2: /locate Command

/locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant

Returns the nearest bastion's coordinates in the Nether.

Method 3: Explore the Nether

Bastions are large enough to spot from a distance. Look for dark blackstone structures contrasting against red netherrack or soul sand. They generate in these Nether biomes:

  • ✅ Nether Wastes (most common)
  • ✅ Soul Sand Valley
  • ✅ Crimson Forest
  • ✅ Warped Forest
  • ❌ Basalt Deltas (never)
💡 Tip: Bastions generate at least 48 blocks apart from each other and at least 48 blocks from any Nether Fortress. If you've found a fortress, walk in the opposite direction to find a bastion faster.

⚠️ Critical: Always wear at least one piece of gold armor (gold helmet recommended since it has the least defense penalty). Without gold armor, ALL Piglins — not just Brutes — will attack you on sight. With gold, only the Brutes are hostile.

Piglin & Piglin Brute Mechanics

Regular Piglins

  • Neutral if you wear gold armor — they won't attack unless provoked
  • Provoked by: opening chests, breaking gold blocks, attacking other Piglins, or mining gilded blackstone
  • Distraction: throw a gold ingot on the ground and Piglins will rush to pick it up, giving you 6-8 seconds to loot
  • Bartering: give gold ingots to Piglins for random items (iron nuggets, ender pearls, potions, etc.)
  • Forgive after time: if you stop hostile actions, regular Piglins will calm down after approximately 30 seconds

Piglin Brutes

  • Always hostile — attack you regardless of gold armor, without exception
  • 50 HP (25 hearts) — twice the health of a regular Piglin
  • 13 damage (6.5 hearts) per hit with their golden axe, unblocked
  • No distracting — They ignore thrown gold ingots completely
  • No respawning — Once killed, Piglin Brutes don't respawn. Kill them all to permanently secure the bastion
  • Usually 1-3 per bastion — Treasure bastions have the most
💡 Strategy: The key to bastion raiding is: deal with Brutes first (they won't forgive you), then loot freely while wearing gold armor. Regular Piglins are easily managed with thrown gold or by sneaking.

The 4 Bastion Types

1. Treasure Room Bastion

The most rewarding and most dangerous type. Features a central treasure room with a massive pile of gold blocks surrounded by lava and guarded by Piglin Brutes.

  • Gold blocks: 10-20+ gold blocks visible on the treasure pile
  • Netherite upgrade template: Found in treasure chests (the only location for this in the game)
  • Ancient debris: Commonly found in chests
  • Snout armor trim: Exclusive to bastion treasure room chests
  • Pigstep music disc: ~5% chance in treasure chests — one of the rarest items
  • Danger level: ★★★★★ — Most Brutes, lava moat, enclosed spaces

2. Bridge Bastion

Features a large bridge spanning over a lava lake. Two connected buildings with chests, plus dangerous walkways.

  • Layout: Two building sections connected by a central bridge
  • Chest loot: Crossbows, spectral arrows, lodestones, iron/gold gear
  • Gold blocks: Fewer than treasure type, scattered in structure
  • Danger level: ★★★★☆ — Falling into lava is the main risk

3. Housing Units Bastion

Multi-story residential complex with many small rooms, beds, and barrels. The safest type for beginners.

  • Layout: Stacked rooms connected by stairs and corridors
  • Chest loot: Enchanted diamond gear, golden apples, arrow bundles, iron
  • Many barrels: Barrels contain additional food and gold items
  • Low Brute count: Often just 1 Piglin Brute
  • Danger level: ★★★☆☆ — Manageable for mid-game players

4. Hoglin Stable Bastion

A livestock pen-style structure with Hoglins (hostile pig-boar mobs) alongside Piglins. Open design with pens and platforms.

  • Layout: Open courtyard with pens, platforms, and stables
  • Hoglins: 2-4 hostile Hoglins that attack on sight — they also fight Piglins if provoked
  • Chest loot: Cooked porkchops, netherite scraps, diamond shovels, saddles
  • Golden carrots: One of the best food sources in the game is commonly found here
  • Danger level: ★★★☆☆ — Hoglins and Piglins may fight each other, reducing threats

Safe Raiding Strategy

Step-by-Step Approach

  1. Equip gold armor — At minimum, a gold helmet in your head slot. This keeps regular Piglins neutral.
  2. Scout from outside — Circle the bastion to identify the type and entrances before going in. Look for the treasure room's gold pile or the stable's open pens.
  3. Kill Piglin Brutes first — They don't respawn and are the main threat. Use a bow from a safe distance, or pillar up 3 blocks and attack from above (they can't reach you).
  4. Throw gold to distract — Before opening chests, throw 1-2 gold ingots on the ground. All nearby regular Piglins will rush to examine them, giving you 6-8 seconds of safe looting.
  5. Loot chests quickly — Opening a chest aggros nearby Piglins temporarily. Grab everything and close it fast. The aggro wears off after 30 seconds if you don't open another chest.
  6. Mine gold blocks last — Breaking gold blocks aggros all Piglins in the bastion. Save this for when you're ready to leave. Mine fast and escape.
  7. Watch for lava — Treasure bastions especially have lava moats. Fire resistance potions are extremely helpful.
💡 Advanced Strategy: Place a bed near the bastion (but NOT in the Nether — beds explode). Instead, create a respawn anchor using crying obsidian (found in bastions!) and glowstone. This sets your Nether spawn point close to the bastion in case you die.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Piglin Brutes respawn?
No. Piglin Brutes are spawned once when the bastion generates and never respawn. Once you kill all Brutes in a bastion, it's permanently safe (regular Piglins are neutral if you wear gold).
Can I wear gold armor to protect against Piglin Brutes?
No. Piglin Brutes always attack on sight regardless of what you're wearing. Gold armor only prevents regular Piglins from being hostile. You must fight or avoid Brutes.
Which bastion type has the best loot?
The Treasure Room bastion has by far the best loot — it's the only source of the netherite upgrade template, Pigstep disc, and Snout trim, plus it has the most gold blocks. However, it's also the most dangerous.
Do bastions generate in Basalt Deltas?
No. Basalt Deltas is the only Nether biome where bastions do not generate. They appear in Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, Crimson Forest, and Warped Forest.
How many gold blocks are in a bastion?
It varies by type. Treasure Room bastions have 10-20+ gold blocks in the central pile. Other types have 3-8 blocks scattered in the structure. A single treasure bastion can yield 100-200+ gold ingots.
Can I trade with Piglins inside bastions?
Yes. Regular Piglins inside bastions accept gold ingots for bartering, just like wild Piglins. This is useful for getting ender pearls, fire resistance potions, and iron nuggets while you explore.
What happens if I break a gold block in a bastion?
All nearby Piglins (within 16 blocks) will become hostile for approximately 30 seconds. This is temporary — they'll calm down after the timer expires, as long as you don't break another gold block. Piglin Brutes, however, are hostile regardless.
