๐๏ธ 1. Badlands Basics
Biome Overview
The Badlands (formerly Mesa) is one of the rarest and most visually striking biomes in Minecraft. Its layered terracotta walls, red sand, and exposed gold make it a unique destination for miners and builders.

- Rarity: One of the rarest biomes โ use MC Seed View's biome finder to locate it
- Climate: Hot and dry โ rain never falls in the Badlands
- Vegetation: Dead bushes and cacti only. No passive mob spawns

โ๏ธ 3. Gold Mining Efficiency
Why Badlands Gold is Special
In most biomes, gold ore only generates between Y=-64 and Y=32. In the Badlands, gold generates from Y=-64 all the way up to Y=256, and at double the normal rate.
Best Mining Strategy
- Surface scanning: Walk along canyon walls and look for exposed gold ore
- Branch mining at Y=32: Highest concentration of gold ore veins
- Ravine exploration: Natural canyons expose multiple ore layers
- Fortune III: Always use Fortune III pickaxe โ up to 4 gold ingots per ore
๐ก Gold Farming Tip
Combine Badlands gold mining with a Nether Gold Farm for maximum bars. Badlands gold works great for powered rails (6 gold = 6 powered rails), golden apples, and villager trading.
๐จ 4. Terracotta Colors & Building
Natural Colors
The Badlands naturally generates 6 distinct terracotta colors in horizontal bands:
- Uncolored Terracotta: Base layer, warm brownish tone
- Orange Terracotta: Most common band color
- Yellow Terracotta: Accent layers between orange
- Light Gray Terracotta: Subtle neutral band
- Brown Terracotta: Deep earth tones
- Red Terracotta: Rich warm red accent
Building Applications
- Adobe houses: Uncolored + orange terracotta for realistic desert architecture
- Aztec temples: Layered terracotta bands mimic ancient stonework
- Western towns: Red sand + terracotta for Wild West saloons
๐ช 5. Surface Mineshaft Raids
Surface Mineshaft Features
Badlands mineshafts generate at the surface level, exposed within the terracotta layers. They are unique to the Badlands and much easier to explore than underground variants.
Loot Highlights
- Golden Apples: Found in minecart chests
- Iron/Gold Ingots: Common chest loot
- Rails: Massive quantities of rails for your own rail network
- Enchanted Books: Rare but valuable finds
- Name Tags: Crucial for mob management
โ ๏ธ Watch Out for Cave Spiders
Mineshafts contain Cave Spider spawners surrounded by cobwebs. Cave Spiders inflict Poison on Normal and Hard difficulty. Bring shears to clear cobwebs and a shield to block attacks.
๐๏ธ 6. Badlands Variants
- Badlands (Standard): Flat-topped plateaus with terracotta bands. Most common variant
- Eroded Badlands: Tall, narrow terracotta spires resembling Bryce Canyon. Extremely rare and photogenic
- Wooded Badlands: Plateaus topped with oak trees and grass. Good for wood supply
๐ค 7. Western-Themed Builds
- Saloon: Oak planks + terracotta walls with swinging fence gate doors
- Sheriff's office: Jail bars + red sand + wanted-poster item frames
- Mining town: Minecart tracks + TNT mine entrance + general store
- Clock tower: Terracotta pillar with a daylight sensor + noteblock clock
๐ 8. Advanced Tips
Terracotta Farming
Since Badlands terracotta is finite, bring Silk Touch to efficiently harvest specific colors for large building projects. Uncolored terracotta can also be smelted from clay balls (4 clay = 1 terracotta).
